Asthma is a multifactorial disease resulting from insufficiently understood interactions between genetic variants and environmental exposures. Some genetic variants can affect asthma or its severity but only in the presence of certain environmental exposures (or vice versa), a phenomenon called gene-by-environment interaction. Forno et al (p 996) looked at 1.8 million genetic variants (single nucleotide polymorphisms [SNPs]) in Puerto Rican children with asthma to determine whether the association between genes and lung function depended on the level of dust mite allergen to which children were exposed.
